Description

The value of self-assessment and network-assessment

In 2023 a self-evaluation version of the SAPROF was developed as an additional tool to the professional rated version. The self-assessment questionnaire provides a simplified version of the SAPROF, which summarizes each factor in one easy to answer question. Each question is supported by a pictogram which aims to facilitate easy understanding of the different protective factors. The self-assessment questionnaire is best used by means of an interview. This offers an opportunity for the individual to share their own views regarding each factor and facilitates communication between the service user and service providers regarding these important strengths domains. In addition to the individual sharing their personal considerations, the interview provides an opportunity to increase self-insight, gain treatment alliance and reach agreement regarding positive intervention goals.

To further complement the professional-rated SAPROF and the self-assessment version, a social network version was also created. This protective factor network-assessment is identical to the self-assessment, but formulated in third-person. By means of the network-assessment questionnaire social network members (such as family or close friends) can be invited to also share their views on the presence of each protective factor for the individual, which offers potential for broader risk communication and collaborative goal setting.

Self-evaluation

SAPROF - Self-assessment:

Inviting service users to evaluate their own protective factors offers an opportunity for individuals to share their own views. This enhances insight, encourages treatment engagement, and inspires collaborative goal setting. Each protective factors is worded through one simple question, supported by a pictogram to facilitate easy understanding for individuals with varying cognitive abilities. The questionnaire is best used by means of an interview between the practitioner and the service user. It is meant as a conversation support tool to discuss protective factors.

Third-party evaluation

SAPROF - Network-assessment:

Social network members can also be asked to evaluate the individual’s protective factors. Providing a third-party point of view. This can be done by parents/caregivers, other family members, close friends, or others who know the individual well (such as teachers). For this a questionnaire is available which is the same as the self-assessment, but formulated in 3rd person. Involving the social network in the evaluation of protective factors offers opportunities to share insights and discuss intervention goals.
