SAPROF - Child Version

The SAPROF-Child Version offers guidelines for the assessment of protective factors for serious problem behavior in children (6-15). Particularly for children focusing on protective factors is essential in risk evaluation. Assessing resilience, motivational, relational and external strengths in addition to risks offers a more comprehensive view of the child, offers hope, and inspires positive goal setting and intervention planning. The SAPROF-Child Version tool is relatively new and currently being adopted into child care practice in various countries.

Description

Assessing protective factors for children

The Structured Assessment of Protective Factors – Child Version (SAPROF-CV) is an SPJ assessment tool specifically designed for the structured assessment of protective factors for serious problem behavior in children (including aggression, bullying, stealing, vandalism, truancy, defiance, lying and serious violation of rules). The tool has been developed to be used in addition to child risk assessment tools, such as the EARL-V3, that focus primarily on risk factors.

All 16 protective factors of the SAPROF-CV are dynamic in nature and therefore have potential to change during intervention. Positive intervention guidance goals can focus on strengthening these factors. Repeated measurement offers opportunities for strengths-based evaluation of intervention progress.

The adult and juvenile versions of the tool, the SAPROF and SAPROF-YV, have successfully been implemented in (forensic) practice in many countries around the world. A wide range of empirical studies show the potential additional value of protective factors for a more balanced and increasingly accurate risk assessment and for offering additional guidance to treatment. The child version of the SAPROF has been developed as an entirely new tool, based on extensive literature review of protective factors specifically for the prevention of serious problem behavior in children (6-15 years).

In addition to the prerequisite that the factors in the SAPROF-CV are empirically well grounded, it is considered vital that they are of practical value for supervision and intervention planning. During its development, experienced clinicians provided feedback on the gender and cultural sensitivity and practical applicability of the SAPROF-CV factors for children and their families from a broad range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The SAPROF-CV may be useful for the assessment of protective factors in various settings, such as child intervention programs, supervision projects, school counselling, pre-trial assessments, (school) threat assessments, etc. The SAPROF-CV protective factors aim to predict for various forms of serious problem behavior, including non-violent criminality, self-harm, and other negative and positive community outcomes. The tool was originally developed in English and has yet to be translated into other languages.
