Description

Assessing protective factors for adults

The SAPROF was originally developed in the Netherlands in 2007 to complement adult violence risk assessment with the explicit evaluation of protective factors. The tool contains 17 protective factors in 3 domains: internal factors, motivational factors, and external factors. It is often used together with risk-focused tools such as the HCR-20V3, the LS/CMI, the VRS, or comparable instruments. It can also be used together with more specialized risk-focused tools for specific offender types, such as the Static/Stable, VRS-SO or SVR-20 for individuals who have sexually offended. The wide body of empirical validation studies to date points to the strong predictive validity of its protective factors and the incremental predictive validity over risk-focused tools. If used to guide strengths-based treatment initiatives rather than for risk assessment, the SAPROF can also be used on its own.

The adult SAPROF manual was translated in over 15 different languages and is applied worldwide in a range of different settings, such as forensic hospitals, prisons, probation services, supported housing, pre-trial assessments, threat assessments, etc. (link Translations) A revision of the original adult SAPROF is in preparation. New insights from using the tool in practice, particularly from practitioners working with intellectual disabilities and in long-term (inpatient) care settings, have brought forward suggestions for additional protective factors and improvements to existing factors. Based on this a preliminary SAPROF-Extended Version was created, which is tested in different pilot sites. (link SAPROF-EV en Research evidence). For adult individuals with a history of sexual offending, a specific SAPROF-Sexual Offending was created. In fact, this tool was created in two formats: the SAPROF-SO actuarial version (a stand-alone tool including the original SAPROF factors and new SO specific factors), and a SAPROF-SO additional SPJ version, to be used together with the original SAPROF. (link SAPROF-SO) In addition to the professional rated SAPROF, more recently a SAPROF self-assessment version and a SAPROF-network assessment version have also been created.

These highly simplified questionnaires include pictograms for easy understanding of each protective factor. Experience from clinical practice shows the self-assessment is particularly useful as interview tool, which invites the service user to contemplate on their on protective factors and tell their story. Feedback from service users and service providers is very positive regarding the application of the self-assessment as a means to converse about protective factors and collectively formulate positive treatment goals. It is highly recommended to attend training in the use of the SAPROF before applying the tool in practice.

Training workshops can be attended on-demand online (available shortly) or by means of live online or in-person training. Through the workshop you will learn about protective factors and become familiar with the tool. You will practice coding the SAPROF, learn about integrating risk and protective factors and contemplate on drawing conclusions from the assessment and how this translates into positive treatment goals and risk management.
